Harvia SFE Safety Switch – automatic cut-off for electric sauna heaters
The Harvia SFE safety switch sits just above your electric heater. If a towel, robe or anything else lands on it, the switch cuts power to the heater straight away, and it won't let the heater start again until the item is taken off. It's the safety device Harvia recommends for commercial and shared saunas (gyms, spas, hotels, rentals), and it's what lets a sauna be started remotely through a compatible Harvia control unit under the IEC/EN 60335-2-53 safety standard. Working as an alternative to the door sensor without the sauna having to be armed for remote start.
It's made by Harvia in Finland, comes in six sizes to suit different Harvia heaters, and is low-profile, so it hardly changes the look of your sauna.

What's in the box
- Harvia SFE safety switch (sensor frame or ring with switch unit)
- 5 m installation cable (2 x 0.5 mm²)
- Quick connectors
Can I put it straight into my sauna?
- Control unit needed: the switch connects to a separate Harvia control unit (for example Xenio) that supports a safety switch. It doesn't work on heaters with built-in controls. Tell us your control model and we'll check it for you.
- Home or commercial? For a home sauna with remote start, Harvia usually recommends a door sensor instead, as it's simpler and costs less. For public or shared saunas, Harvia says to always choose the SFE safety switch. Happy to talk it through with you.
- Mounting: it's fixed to the wall above the heater, at the height and spacing shown in the manual.
- Heaters over 20 kW: the standard doesn't require a safety switch above 20 kW total output, though many commercial operators fit one anyway.
Installation
The switch connects to your heater's control unit, so it must be installed by a registered electrician. The Harvia datasheet can be downloaded below, and we can send our Sauna Electrician's Cheat Sheet to your electrician too.
Why you'll love it
- Cuts the heater off right away if something lands on it
- Stops the heater starting while anything is still on it
- Meets the safety standard needed for remote start of commercial saunas
- Slim black design from Harvia in Finland
- Doesn't need arming like the door sensor does
